Black Glazed Guttos

Ancient Campanian Black Glazed Guttos with Griffin c.350 BC. Size 4 5/8 inches wide, 3 inches high. Classic blackware guttos form with a rounded, ribbed body, a single loop handle, and a high spout with a funnel mouth, all on a raised, tiered spool foot. The tondo is decorated in low relief scenes depicting a griffin, an amalgam creature with eagle wings, a lion's head, and curved horns, rearing its front legs and open mouth into the air. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, loss to a portion of the foot. Light earthen deposits throughout. Provenance: Ex.
